If you are suffering from chronic dry, cracked and peeling skin you could be suffering from a medical disorder that may requires a visit to a physician. If your skin is dry, a little flaky and itches then you may just be suffering from dry winter skin itch.
Dry skin can be caused by nutritional or vitamin deficiencies, environmental causes, or as mentioned above a chronic disease or skin disorder. What can you do about your dry skin?
If you are suffering from dry winter skin then there are a few natural remedies that can be used to treat dry itchy skin.
Moisturize after bathing or washing your hands. A few drops of olive oil or coconut oil work very well. Coconut oil is actually a semi solid fat that you can buy, I prefer the organic form. It can be used on your skin, in stir fry, and baking.
Omega-3 fatty acids:
- Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
- (Fish oil capsules)
Fish oil forms healthy membranes around your cells helping to plump up with water and keep your skin hydrated. Omega 3 fatty acids help provide more oxygen and a richer blood supply to your cells too. Dosage Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams of fish oil
Omega-6 fatty acids:
- Linoleic acid (LA)
- Gamma linolenic acid (GLA)
- Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA)
- Arachidonic acid (AA)
Omega-6 fatty acids come from plants. They can include Flax seed oil, sunflower seed oil, pumpkin seeds.
Borage oil or Evening primrose oil liquid or liquid capsules. Dosage 1,000 milligrams Red or inflamed skin can benefit from taking these supplements.
Vitamin E plumps the skin but can cause some breakouts if your skin is sensitive, you can try taking a dry E formula and still get the same results. Dosage 400 to 1,000 IUs
Zinc helps fatty acids assimilate, or absorb better. Dosage 50 mg
WHAT DOES THE DOCTOR HAVE TO SAY?
Topical Skin Oils:
- Organic Coconut oil
- Organic Olive Oil
If you have a dry itchy, flaking scalp do not use shampoos that contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
Instead choose shampoos with natural ingredients:
Rosemary oil, lavender oil, geranium oil, chamomile oil, tea tree oil can be beneficial if you suffer from dandruff, but can be over drying and cause more flakes if you do not have dandruff.
The chlorine that is pumped into our homes to make our water safe is not good for your skin, or your health. Filter your water that comes from the tap before you drink it.
Put a chlorine filter on your shower head, that is replaceable, and you will notice a decrease in your dry skin and scalp pretty quickly.
Use only fragrance-free soaps, and alcohol-free lotions.
Use a humidifier at home, and when you sleep.
